Alpinia nutans- Has been incorrectly called Amomum cardamomum or Cardamon but it is not true cardamon. Hardy foliage plant is often used as a shade groundcover. It rarely blooms, but the leaves smell of spice when touched. It grows to 3 feet in shade. Great patio and container plant. Very hardy. Zones 7 and higher.

ALPINIAS--Come in all sizes from small to large. Leaves are frequently fragrant. Most bear large clusters of stunning blooms. Like medium to full sun. Many can overwinter without special care. All make good pot plants.

Many species enter dormancy in response to shorter days, cool temperatures, or dry conditions. Rhizomes (the underground stem) survive in a dormant condition beneath the soil surface during cold or dry conditions.
