Cannas are ideal in tropical-style gardens with their dramatic flower color and foliage. They are very hardy in Zones 8 and up and can withstand both wet and dry periods. Cannas are a great compliment to other tropicals in the landscape, such as bananas or palms. They like moist soil and some varieties will thrive even in boggy conditions. Although they prefer sun, they will grow well in partial shade. Cannas are easy to propagate by dividing pieces of the rhizomes. If growing Cannas in colder regions where the ground freezes, dig up the rhizomes before the hard winter freeze and store in a dry place.
